New York State is committed to reducing and limiting hands-on interventions and/or isolation in its human service agencies.

Project Summary

The challenge.

To reduce restraint and seclusion practices in the New York State human service systems by identifying the challenges faced by providers, and providing training and resources in best practice alternatives.

The research.

This three-year grant-funded project was developed in partnership with the Developmental Disabilities Planning Council (DDPC) with input from organizations, parents/guardians, and individuals receiving services in all regions of NYS. The research included a literature review, landscape analysis, and the identification of trainings and resources that could reduce the use of restraint and seclusion practices.

The outcome.

The NYS Virtual Training and Resource Center includes highly requested trainings and best practice resources. By sharing this information, providing coaching, and increasing inter-agency collaboration, we can improve human service systems throughout New York State.
